new stuff from jenna herbst

denver’s jenna herbst set out to write and record a song per week for 8 weeks, and at the end of the 8 weeks she had, assumingly, 8 songs which she lovingly entitled her “songbird challenge.” all the songs were recorded in her living room, for what its worth. jenna is in the band the juniper trees and sent these songs out to the fans of her band. after the songs were set, she got with mark raynes to mix and master them and the end result, plus a couple other songs, is songbird. i have not heard the entire record, but the few songs i was sent, i am definitely digging. she’s got a lovely voice, which is always a huge plus, lyrically she’s very solid and her musicianship is simple yet effective. less is more in this case, let the voice and lyrics paint the picture. really look forward to hearing the entire record. definitely recommended…

wrinkle neck mules “leaving chattanooga”

wrinkle neck mules, one of the more interesting band names i have come across recently, has a new record, apprentice to ghosts, which came out on the 21st of last month. i have not heard the entire thing, but i really, really dig this little twangy ditty. they’ve been around for like 12 years and have released 5 years, and much like american aquarium, they’re now just coming into my realm of consciousness? has anyone heard of these guys, or any of their records? i am definitely intrigued. the record came out on lower 40, btw. also, they apparently have a song in a geico commercial? dont think i have seen that one, or maybe i have without even knowing?

revisiting: silkworm

about 4 years ago, i made a little introduction to one of my favorite bands, chicago’s silkworm. sadly, they are no longer as they broke up after the death of drummer michael dalqhuist. michael was in a car accident in a northern suburb of chicago which was caused by a “model” who was attempting to commit suicide. sadly, she was not killed, but michael and two other chicago musicians, doug meis and john glick. very sad, shit. well, i have never stopped listening to em, as they put out some of my favorite records from 90′s/00′s and just in general, no matter the time period. like most bands, you take some time off from em, but then get back into em, usually in a franatical manner, at least thats how i operate. well, at the moment i am in complete silkworm immersion. re-visiting their entire catalogue and it sounds just as awesome in 2012 as they did in 98, 2000, 2002, and so forth. most bands i can liken them to another, with silkworm, to my ears, they were a complete original. since the dissolving of silkworm, tim and andy have gone on to form bottomless pit, another superb band, but i would expect nothing less. although it still makes me yearn for that original silkworm lineup.
